When things ‘aren’t good’ it’s sometimes difficult to find relief. You could be feeling like you’ll never be back to ‘normal’ or perhaps you’re struggling to remember happier times. There are small steps that you can take to make it easier for yourself. Here are our suggestions:

  1. Go Outside

Even if it’s just standing in your garden, grab some fresh air. Take in your surroundings and breathe.

2.    Get Organised

Sort out your wardrobe. Plan your outfits for the next week, or even batch-cook your meals. Take back control. You’ll feel better for it.

3.     Write

Grab a paper and a pen and just let the words flow. Write about your feelings, your wants, your worries. It doesn’t matter if it makes no sense. Just get the words down on paper.

4.     Go Off-Grid

Whether it’s an hour, a day, a week – come off social media. What you see online is only what people want you to see. It’s not real. Concentrate on you.

5.     Try Something New

Whether it’s a new craft activity or just trying-out that new coffee shop in town, give it a go.

6.     Talk

In an ideal world, we’d all have an excellent support network around us. Unfortunately, that’s not always true. Tell people how you are feeling. You’ll be surprised how many other people have been through what you’re experiencing. If you don’t feel able to chat face-to-face, then send them a message. If you genuinely feel that you can’t talk to anyone that you know, then please reach out to a helpline. Pick up the phone. They’ll be there for you.

7.     You Are Not The Only One

When you’re not feeling good, it’s easy to tell yourself that it’s your fault and that you’re the only person feeling like this. Firstly, it’s not your fault. Secondly, there are many, many people who feel the way you do. You are not alone.

8.     Go For Comfort

Grab your old PJs, a cup of tea, watch your favourite movie or TV show. Relax in the bath for as long as you like. Take good care of yourself.

9.     Say Thank You

If you’ve had a lot of love and support from someone recently, buy a card and tell them how much you appreciate their support.

10.  Can’t Stand Your Job?

Ideally, we’d be able to walk out of job we dislike and start another one the following day. Those days are gone. Leaving a job and finding another are stressful. Especially if it’s been awhile since you were last job-seeking. Take a small step today. Sign-up for a free online course in a subject you’re really interested in. There is lots of free learning. Some of the best are provided by Futurelearn and Alison.
